Remedial massage is a definite science in one specialized aspect of physiotherapy. It is, without a doubt, the oldest form of medicine known to man. Massage as a medicine goes back to the very earliest days of ancient history. It is known that the Chinese were employing massage therapy 3000 years before the birth of Christ.

A Swedish professor, Peter Henry Ling, made the application of massage into a science in the early 19th century. In fact, the term “Swedish Massage” is still used to denote the therapeutic application of massage.

Remedial massage is a system of manipulation of the soft tissues of the body with the hands. It has numerous benefits, both mechanical and reflexive, as listed below. It can be used as an injury preventative technique as well as a treatment for injury. The process of remedial massage is deeper than relaxing massage and therefore the benefits are usually greater.
